Life in the Evolving Forest

A place for creatures big and very very small…

In many ways, the animal life on planet Oaar is similar to the life that we see on Earth. The world is full biodiversity, but of course with their own particular evolutionary journey dictated by their unique environment.

Work in progress nursery for the Dryari

While the forests of Ooar may look lush, water is scarce — plants and animals have evolved their own unique ways of obtaining and storing water. Tree roots reach deeper, and their leaves have more elastic cells which are able to stretch and store larger amounts of moisture. Many animals have similarly evolved their own ways of addressing water scarcity.

One creature we’ll focus on today are the Oaar Ants, or as the Dryari call them — Myr. These are much larger than the ants we see on Earth, and carry a large sack on the third part of their body that is used exclusively for storing water. Myr have an extremely efficient metabolic system, and actually focus more energy time on gathering moisture than they do food. The Queen Myr is actually smaller than the worker Myr, as she does not have a water sack.

Myr can swarm over surfaces looking for sources of water and food. Their favorite source of water is a particular tree species that pollinates itself with water running from its leaves, right down to the roots. Myr colonies are frequently found near these trees and will swarm over the trunks in pollinating season to collect water. They are so adept at collecting and storing water that the Dryari keep trained Myrkrip (large Myr eating creatures) to keep the water-stealing Myr away from crops, water reserves and the Ancient One.
